Salary budget France: plan from net pay

Published by Saveet · Updated April 2026

Gross salary is a headline. Rent, Navigo, mutuelle, and grocery inflation hit the net. Budget the number that lands on your account.

💡 Example: 2,190 EUR net, around the median private-sector wage. Housing is 715 EUR including charges, a national average rent, not a Paris studio.

Example amounts for planning only. Adjust every category to your city, income, and obligations. This is not financial or religious advice.

In this guide

  • Plan a France salary month from net pay after withholding.
  • Protect housing and mutuelle before lifestyle.
  • Example 2,190 EUR net with an 18 percent savings line.
  • Not tax advice: use the slider for your city.

Category breakdown

Unallocated:

Average the last three payslips. Subtract rent or the loan you already pay. Food in this template is about 12 percent of the month, transport is one Navigo month at 90.80 EUR, savings about 18 percent. If your employer refunds half the pass, cut that line to 45 EUR.

Order of operations

  • Net pay in, then rent or mortgage, then energy and insurance.
  • Food as a weekly cap, not a vague "we will see".
  • Transport pass or fuel as a fixed line.
  • Lifestyle last, with a weekly cash or card limit.
  • Automatic transfer to savings the day after payday.

When the month is tight

Cut lifestyle first, then food waste (not nutrition), then subscriptions. Do not cut the savings line to zero unless rent is at risk. Use the template to test a lower lifestyle number before you promise yourself a gym you will not use.

Frequently asked questions

Should I budget the 13th month?

Treat it as extra until it is paid. Plan the twelve regular months so December is not required to survive.

CDI vs freelance?

This page assumes a regular net salary. Use the freelance guide if invoices are irregular.

How much housing is too much?

Banks often look at about a third of net. This template is already at 33 percent with 715 EUR housing on 2,190 EUR. If you go higher, food and savings get squeezed.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is a cashflow template. For tax, use official sources or a professional.
