Shared trip budget: split travel costs with friends

Published by Saveet · Updated April 2026

Trips break friendships when one person books everything and the rest pay "later". Put the total on the table before tickets are non-refundable.

💡 Example 2,800 EUR for the group pot (not per person). Divide by headcount in the template.

Example amounts for planning only. Adjust every category to your city, income, and obligations. This is not financial or religious advice.

In this guide

  • Shared trip envelope: transport, lodging, food, activities, buffer.
  • One working currency for the group.
  • Example 2,800 EUR for the trip pot.
  • Settle debts before anyone flies home.

Unallocated:

Agree the dates and the ceiling first. This example is four people, seven nights: 180 EUR each for transport, 35 EUR per person per night for lodging, 25 EUR per person per day for food. Buffer is 8.6 percent for a missed train or a booking fee. Equal shares unless someone takes a private room.

Who paid what

  • One person can hold the booking if everyone transferred their share first.
  • Log each payment with a name, not "cash from the group".
  • Settle leftovers the last morning, not three weeks later on a chat.
  • Public Saveet events are useful to see how other groups split trips.

Currency: keep the trip in one currency in the template even if someone pays a hotel in another. Convert once at booking, then stop arguing about yesterday's rate.

Frequently asked questions

What if someone cancels?

Write the rule before booking: they lose their share of non-refundable costs unless a replacement is found.

Meals out vs groceries?

Cap restaurants per day. Groceries for breakfast keep the food line alive.

Is the 2,800 EUR per person?

No. It is a group example. Divide by the number of travellers.

How do we use Saveet?

Create a shared event, invite by email, and log each payment under the same categories.
